The GCF is a not-for-profit organization established by the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists to support ovarian cancer research, training of cancer specialists in laboratory research, and a variety of programs for patient education and public awareness of gynecologic cancers. Calls to 800-444-4441 will enable an individual to obtain a list of nearby specialists in gynecologic oncology, a nation-wide directory of all SGO members, and informational literature. The GCF also sponsors an interactive Web site called the Women's Cancer Network (www.wcn.org). It offers understandable medical information about gynecologic cancers, treatment options, and experimental therapeutic programs. By answering specific questions a woman will be told her risk for developing gynecologic and breast cancers and how to change those risks.

The National Cancer Institute's Cancer Information Service is a national information and education network. It is a practical first stop for cancer patients. Trained information specialists provide information by telephone related to specific cancers, treatments, and coping strategies. The National Ovarian Cancer Association, formerly Corinne Boyer Fund, a Canadian organization, is dedicated to overcoming ovarian cancer, providing leadership by supporting women living with the disease, building awareness in the general public, encouraging research into early detection, improved treatment and ultimately, a cure for this disease. Programs for education include two Web sites with resource information and a package for general information about ovarian cancer with the video "Listen to Whispers."

The OWH (within the US Department of Health and Human Services) provides national leadership in advancing women's health through public policy, research, service delivery, and education. The OWH develops, stimulates, and coordinates women's health research, health care services, and public and health professional education and training across the agencies of the Department of Health and Human Services. Programs include the Centers of Excellence in Women's Health. These centers provide integrated and comprehensive clinical services, including regular screening for breast and gynecological cancers, as well as research on women's health issues. The OWH also developed the National Women's Health Information Center (NWHIC). This gateway to over 800 topics on women's health, including reproductive health, is accessible through the web site (www.4woman.gov) and the toll-free phone service (1-800-994-WOMAN).

The SGO is a professional organization of physicians who are specialists trained in the comprehensive management of women with cancers of the female reproductive tract. Gynecologic Oncologists are certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology in obstetrics and gynecology and receive certification of special competence in gynecologic oncology, following an additional three to four years of training. Affiliate members of the SGO are specialists in radiation therapy, medical oncology or pathology who have particular interests and skills in gynecologic cancer care. The overall purpose of the SGO is to improve the care of women with gynecologic cancers and to raise the standards of practice in the treatment and prevention of gynecologic malignancies.
